Agartala: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved an increase of 50 MBBS seats at Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) from the 2026-27 academic session, taking its annual intake to 200.
The increase takes the total number of MBBS seats across Tripura’s three medical colleges to 500. The updated undergraduate seat matrix was released by the NMC’s Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB), senior officials said.
Tripura Medical College and Tripura Santiniketan Medical College each have 150 MBBS seats.
Assam has the highest number of MBBS seats among the northeastern states at 1,975 seats, followed by Manipur at 550. Meghalaya has 250, Sikkim 200, while Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram and Nagaland have 100 each.
Tripura CM and health minister Manik Saha said that the increase would create more opportunities for students in Tripura and the Northeast to pursue medical education locally. It would also help improve the availability of specialised healthcare services in the region.
