2 class 10 students missing after being swept away in Mahananda, 1 rescued
Times of India | 15 September 2026The missing students were identified as Mohammad Safayel Hossain Nawshad, a Bangladesh resident, and Pragjyoti Das from Bihar. The rescued student, Divyansh Saha is from Mekhliganj.
The students had gone to the Mahananda barrage to bathe when the water level suddenly rose, catching them in the strong current. A search and rescue operation was launched soon after.
Recounting the incident, Divyansh said, “When the water level suddenly rose, we started returning. One of them was swept away and I went to save him. Another came to rescue me, while the other two were swept away. I managed to survive.”
SDRF and NDRF teams were deployed for the search. SDRF official Uttam Kumar Sen said, “There are boulders in the river, which are making the operation difficult and time-consuming. Rescue efforts are underway and the NDRF team is also at the spot. All possible efforts are being made to trace the missing students.”
