Left unions rally in Kol, demand action over JU violence

Kolkata: Members of Leftist student unions took to streets in central Kolkata on Monday in protest against the recent violence, vandalism and entry of outsiders to the campus of Jadavpur University. They demanded punishment for those involved in the incident.
Around 2 pm, around 150 members of various Left-backed unions, including SFI, AIDSO, PSU, AISA and PDSF among others assembled near Sealdah commercial complex and took out a rally, which reached till Calcutta University, College Street, covering a distance of about 3 km.
Md Hasib Hossain, an SFI member, said, “Our protest march turned the spotlight on two major issues — violence on JU campus and safeguarding the education system in the state. We want a stern action against the accused of the JU violence, especially those who have been identified by the CCTV footage. Our protest will continue until our demands are met.”
“We are marching today, protesting against the ABVP members’ flexing muscles on the JU campus. We want punishment for the accused of the campus violence on Wednesday night,” said another participant rally.
Apart from the JU issue, the protesters demanded exemplary punishment for the killers of Sk Mohammad Mafik in Bankura. “His son Abdul is a volunteer for ‘School Thik Karo’ campaign. The father-son duo had been attacked and Mafik passed away. All the accused of this crime should be punished. We also demand the restoration of the education system and revocation of NTA and NEP 2020,” said Hossain.
