Agartala: Tripura CM Manik Saha on Sunday presented toolkits to skilled Bru-Reang youths in Amarpur under Gomati district as part of the govt’s effort to shift rehabilitated families from dependence on aid to sustainable livelihoods.
Saha said a total of 1,877 toolkits and 255 driving licences were given to trained Bru settlers who fled western Mizoram after an ethnic clash in 1997. He said that after a tripartite agreement, around 30,000 displaced Brus were settled in Gomati and Dhalai districts two years ago, preceding the Lok Sabha elections.
The chief minister started the distribution of a stipend of Rs 2,000 for each of 4,554 trained candidates, totalling Rs 91.08 lakh, and presented a booklet from the directorate of skill development.
Recalling insights shared by Union home minister Amit Shah, the chief minister said the govt’s goal went beyond providing training and aimed to link skill development with lasting livelihood opportunities. He said the Centre and the state govt were working together to help trained youths become self-sufficient and capable of creating their own employment rather than relying only on job openings.
