Kolkata: Teachers of Presidency University issued a statement on Saturday, expressing their solidarity with Jadavpur University students and faculty over ABVP’s storming of the campus on Thursday.
“As members of Presidency University, we are shocked and dismayed by the recent destruction of the institutional emblem of Jadavpur University, and the attack on the institution by outsiders,” read the statement that traced the birth of Jadavpur University (formerly known as the Bengal College of Engineering and Technology) to the Swadeshi movement, and the National Council of Education.
“We are sure that appropriate action will be taken against such miscreants who dared to commit such vandalism in an academic institution and attack one of the richest symbols of higher education in India. We condemn the incident in unequivocal terms and hope that the dignity of our national culture will be suitably restored,” Presidency University teachers stated.
“We would also like to note that we are concerned by similar mobilisation by outsiders at the main gate of Presidency University yesterday. We stand by our institution and emphasise that all educational institutions in the country should remain secure, autonomous and democratic,” the statement concluded.
