Kolkata: Nadia-based Congress neta Anisur Rahman, 50, and his 24-year-old son Abu Sufian, were shot and hacked to death in Nadia’s Nakashipara on Saturday night. Three people have been arrested, including local Haranagar gram panchayat pradhan Fatima Biwi, whose jailed husband Jabbar Sheikh has been named as the alleged mastermind.
Rahman and his son Sufian, a lawyer practising at the Krishnanagar court, were returning home by car around 9:30pm when assailants blocked their vehicle near the Nagadi rail gate, roughly 200 metres from their residence.
The attackers first opened fire on the car and then attacked both men with sharp weapons. Both died on the spot from excessive bleeding.
The two others arrested were identified as Sageb Sk and Mithu Sheikh. All three were produced before the Krishnanagar court, which remanded them to nine days in police custody.
CM Suvendu Adhikari said on Sunday: “The SP informed me that Jabbar Sheikh, who is in jail, is responsible for the murder. His wife, who is a Trinamool panchayat pradhan, has also been arrested. Trinamool operatives committed the murder. The rule of law applies to everyone.”
Additional SP Surajit Kumar Dey said the investigation was ongoing, with the total number of assailants and rounds fired still being established.
Local Congress representative Tipu Sultan alleged: “Jabbar orchestrated this from jail using miscreants to gain control of the area. If the administration conducts a proper and impartial investigation, everything will become crystal clear.”
Former MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury condemned the killings on social media, saying, “Such an atrocious incident on Independence Day raises serious questions regarding public security and political freedom.”
Bengal Congress president Subhankar Sarkar, who observed a ‘Black Day’ in protest, alleged the murder was pre-planned and politically motivated.
“A number of panchayat functionaries in Nadia wanted to join Congress and had contacted Anisur Rahman for that purpose. BJP did not want that to happen,” he claimed.
