Kolkata: A 26-year-old bar manager, Champa Senapati, was found dead under mysterious circumstances at her rented flat in Picnic Garden early on Saturday. Police detained her live-in partner and their driver after her family alleged murder, robbery and a cover-up.
Senapati, a native of Badabandha in Odisha’s Jagatsinghpur, had lived in Kolkata for four years and co-ran a commercial bar floor with her partner at Luvkush Apartment on Picnic Garden Road, under Tiljala Police Station.
Her family, who last spoke to her on Thursday, became alarmed when her partner called saying she was not answering. Around 3 am on Saturday, her brother, Rajat Senapati, received a call from the partner’s phone. An unknown woman told him that Senapati was dead.
Rajat said CNMC&H records showed she was brought to the emergency room at 5.45 am, nearly three hours later, and was declared brought dead. Her partner reportedly told doctors he had found her hanging.
The family rejected suicide claims, alleging the scene was staged and valuables looted. The Tiljala police registered an FIR under sections 103 and 305 of the BNS.
The flat was sealed for forensic probe. Cops are questioning the partner and driver, while probing the unidentified woman’s call and missing belongings.
