Forget previous probe, HC slams CBI in RG Kar rape-murder case

Kolkata: “Don’t get influenced by the previous investigation,” Calcutta High Court on Thursday told the CBI, reiterating the need to reinvestigate the RG Kar rape and murder case from the night of the incident until the victim’s cremation.
The division bench of Justice Shampa Sarkar and Justice Tirthankar Ghosh observed that while it was repeatedly asking the new probe team of the CBI to re-examine all points related to the incident, starting from the crime scene at the seminar hall to the crematorium where her last rites were performed in an alleged hurry, nothing much has been done.
The special bench wants to see the final probe report. The case will be next heard on Aug 28.
“Forget the previous investigation. Put that aside and look at it in a new way. Don’t conduct the new probe influenced by the previous one,” Justice Sarkar told Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Dhiraj Kumar Trivedi, representing the CBI.
Justice Ghosh questioned the ASG about whether statements of the junior doctor were recorded and about the time when the victim’s mother called the hospital in the morning after the incident.
The central investigating agency recently replaced the investigating officer Seema Pahuja with Sandipani Garg following concerns raised by the victim’s parents.
The ASG submitted that all allegations were being thoroughly examined. “They are skilled officers. The probe has progressed ... We will ensure there is no negligence in the investigation. Let us be given sufficient time,” the CBI’s counsel submitted.
