Park Circus horror: Local goons harass family after truck hits car

Kolkata: A 45-year-old businesswoman from Jadavpur was allegedly molested and threatened near the Park Circus crossing early Monday after a road collision.
According to a police complaint by the victim, the incident occurred around midnight on Aug 3 while she was travelling towards the AJC Bose Flyover along with her husband and relatives to attend a family function at a popular hangout in Park Circus crossing.
A truck collided with their car, causing severe damage. When the couple managed to stop the vehicle and report the incident to on-duty cops, a local crowd intervened, aggressively pushed her, touched her inappropriately, and issued death threats. Police have launched a probe.
“We were going to attend the marriage anniversary of a relative in two cars. My husband was driving our Honda City car and a total of six of us were in the car. We were on the Nasiruddin Road and were driving towards AJC Bose flyover when a big truck driving to the right side of our truck brushed against us. It looked that the driver was drunk and swerved to the left on to ours to avoid something on the road. This happened even as our car kept proceeding straight. As a result, the right-side door glass was completely shattered, and the entire right side of the car was heavily damaged. I shouted for the truck to stop, but it kept moving on. I kept hitting at the helper’s door before it slowed. I got off the car and stood in front of the truck at the Nasiruddin Road-AJC Bose road crossing forcing it to halt,” she recalled.
“I told the truck driver that he came from behind. I asked why he wanted to kill us. Even as I stopped the truck, I kept searching for cops. At least four of them stood near the crossing but none came forward,” claimed the victim.
“We called up relatives travelling in another car. The police did not come, even though I was crying for help. Instead, a dozen persons, who emerged from the other side, started shouting. It happened around 12.10 am. They kept asking me why I had stopped the truck. They asked us to leave saying this was their area and they will handle it. My guess is that they wanted to extort money from the truck driver. When I protested, they began to threaten me and even pushed me by touching me ianappropriately,” claimed the victim.
She said cops from the East Traffic Guard intervened when a sergeant arrived. “The police stepped in and told us to go to the Karaya PS. A cop checked whether my husband had been driving drunk, but did not check the truck driver immediately. Why was no action taken at the spot? It felt like they only wanted to extort money, thinking we were alone. Finally, I travelled in our second car to Karaya PS and filed the FIR,” said the victim.
The police refuted the claims stating said that they had intervened immediately and asked her to go to police station where she could begin legal proceedings. “We have arrested the driver and are checking CCTV footages to nab the young men who threatened and misbehaved with her. The woman was making multiple allegations but all of them needed probe. Even in her FIR. there are certain sweeping statements. We have lodged the FIR as per her version and added all relevant sections including insulting the modesty and hurt,” said an officer.
