Man arrested for killing son over property dispute

Kolkata: A two-and-a-half-year-old boy was allegedly strangled to death by his father at Baduria in North 24 Parganas on Monday after the accused became enraged over his father’s decision to transfer the family’s ancestral property to the child instead of him. Police have arrested the accused, Prosenjit Sarkar, and sealed the family home as part of the investigation.
Police said the victim, Arijit Sarkar, was found dead at his residence in Ward No. 8 of Baduria Municipality on Monday morning. Locals said Prosenjit was unemployed and addicted to gambling. “He frequently sold household belongings to finance his gambling and often returned home intoxicated,” a neighbour said.
Concerned about the future of the family, Prosenjit’s father decided to transfer the ancestral property to his grandson, Arijit, instead of his son. Family members claimed this was not the first time Prosenjit had attempted to harm his son. “On an earlier occasion, he had tried to kill the child but was stopped by relatives,” said Samir Sarkar, the accused’s cousin. “He had spent six months in jail before being released on bail and returned home recently,” he added.
Police said on Monday morning, Prosenjit allegedly strangled the child inside the house and then quietly left the premises. However, locals grew suspicious and managed to detain him before he could escape.
A murder case has been registered at Baduria Police Station against the accused. The child’s body has been sent for post-mortem.
