Jalpaiguri: BJP supporters allegedly hurled eggs at their own party functionaries, including a mandal president, during a clash over attempts to bring Trinamool panchayat members to the Chhoto Salbari gram panchayat office in Cooch Behar’s Sitalkuchi on Monday evening.
The office had remained largely non-functional after the BJP came to govt in the state. Party seniors, led by mandal president Pabitra Adhikary, escorted Trinamool panchayat members to the office, saying the move was aimed at restoring civic services.
Several people were injured before police intervened, rescued the BJP functionaries and escorted them away.
The incident comes merely days after BJP state president Samik Bhattacharya had warned party members against complacency. “
“If anyone thinks that we have 207 seats and starts to brag, the results could be dangerous. Egg therapy can suddenly reverse. Our party men and Sanatanis should remember that eggs can change their targets very fast,” he had said.
Locals alleged BJP netas accepted “cut money” from Trinamool panchayat members to facilitate their entry into the office. BJP denied the allegation, insisting the move was only to restore normal functioning of the gram panchayat.
Sitalkuchi BJP MLA Sabitri Barman attributed the violence to public anger against Trinamool. “People did not want the Trinamool members to enter the office. We only wanted civic services to resume, but people are not ready to accept them after the past 15 years,” she said.
