Burdwan: Fear and concern over security gripped residents of Renaissance Township after STF arrested Md Hamim Mondal on Friday on suspicion of terror links.
On Sunday, the Renaissance Central Welfare Society met to discuss security and communal harmony. Member Bapi Sarkar said, “We met with the objective of ensuring a safe and harmonious Renaissance Township.” The society plans to broadcast an audio message through a public announcement vehicle “to help dispel fear and panic among residents”, focusing on awareness about renting out homes, security precautions and communal harmony.
Samir Ganguly said that with most residents coming from outside, “the township is gradually developing into a metropolitan-style community” where neighbours often do not know each other. Debajyoti Sinha Roy stressed that “homeowners must properly verify the background of tenants” while ensuring vigilance does not create hatred or division.
The Burdwan Renaissance Township Allottees’ Welfare Association also met to recommend security measures. Sandip Mondal urged mandatory submission of tenant ID documents to police, while Lalbehari Banerjee said “illegal cars’ entry are to be restricted and checked by security”.
East Burdwan cops plan to meet residents of Renaissance and Ullas townships and make tenant verification mandatory. Ullas resident Bisweswar Ghosh questioned whether “proper due diligence” was being followed by absentee landlords before renting out properties. Meanwhile, BJP MLA Chandra Sekhar Banerjee urged residents to submit tenant documents to police and report suspicious activities.
