Kolkata: Bengal chief minister Suvendu Adhikari has the second lowest declared assets among the chief ministers of the country’s 28 states and three Union Territories, according to a report by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR).
Adhikari declared assets worth Rs 85 lakh, marginally higher than Jammu & Kashmir CM Omar Abdullah, who has the lowest declared assets at Rs 55 lakh, the report said.
According to the affidavit filed by Adhikari before the EC ahead of the 2026 Bengal assembly elections, he had Rs 12,000 in cash and deposits of just over Rs 7.24 lakh spread across 13 bank accounts. He also declared investments worth around Rs 24.5 lakh in fixed deposits and Kisan Vikas Patra. The affidavit states that he owns no car or jewellery and has no liabilities.
Adhikari owns agricultural land in Egra and Nandigram, non-agricultural land and three residential properties. For 2025-26, he declared an annual income of over Rs 17 lakh. His declared assets have fallen from a little over Rs 1 crore in the 2021 assembly elections, with bank deposits declining significantly over the five-year period.
The ADR report identified Karnataka CM D K Shivakumar as the richest, with declared assets of Rs 1,413 crore, followed by Andhra Pradesh CM N Chandrababu Naidu (Rs 931 crore), Tamil Nadu CM C Joseph Vijay (Rs 648 crore) and Arunachal Pradesh CMPema Khandu (Rs 332 crore).
The report said only 7% of the 31 CMs have declared assets below Rs 1 crore. The average assets of all 31 chief ministers stand at Rs 118 crore, while four of them are billionaires.
