Kolkata: A small-scale trader from Bansdroni, who sells cigarettes, was cheated of his fares, worth over Rs 84,000, after a man, posing as a Kolkata Police officer, fled with his goods.
Prashanta Karmakar lodged a complaint at the Bansdroni PS, stating that on July 17, when he was transporting a carton of cigarettes from Bansdroni to a house in Ukilpara, the accused started following him and intercepted him near Datta Villa. The accused claimed to be a police officer and demanded to inspect bills and documents for the consignment. As an argument broke out, the accused threatened him with violence and seized the carton, valued at Rs 84,645, Karmakar said. The fake officer reportedly ordered Karmakar to return with a stamped copy of the bill for verification. When Karmakar returned to the spot with the documents, the accused had fled, police said.
Police are examining CCTV footage from commercial establishments along the suspect’s escape route.
