  • Jalpaiguri: Urging migrant workers to come back to Bengal and earn their livelihood here, CM Suvendu Adhikari on Monday highlighted several mega projects in the pipeline. Adhikari announced that state govt had identified 15 acres for Amul’s mega ice-cream factory in north Bengal and would soon hand it over.

This comes after Adhikari laid the foundation stone for Amul’s integrated dairy plant in Howrah recently.

Speaking to the media at the Jalpaiguri DM’s office, where he distributed compensation cheques to families of 13 workers from north Bengal who died in the Sikkim tunnel collapse, Adhikari said, “We are giving utmost priority to north Bengal. Many more industries are likely to come here. People from this region need not go to other states for livelihood. Please give us some time. It was only 10 months since we came to office. Bengal will get the full benefit of a double-engine govt.”

Pointing out that 12 tea gardens are likely to reopen within two months, Adhikari said, “We have already started disbursing the Rs 330 crore received under the Pradhan Mantri Cha Shramik Protsahan Prakalpa among tea workers. The previous govt declined to distribute it. We will ensure all closed tea gardens reopen.”

Families of the tunnel collapse victims received Rs 5 lakh each from the state govt, along with home guard enrolment assistance certificates for the next of kin. The families also received Rs 4 lakh each from the Sikkim govt, Rs 5 lakh each from NHPC, Rs 2 lakh each from the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund and Rs 5 lakh each from the employer.

Later, the CM held a meeting with finance minister Swapan Dasgupta at Uttarkanya. He is also scheduled to virtually inaugurate a flyover on Bardhaman Road in Siliguri.

Adhikari said Annapurna Bhandar funds would be extended to all eligible beneficiaries by Aug 30 and added that the Mukhya Mantri Sasthya Bima Yojna will cover those who do not qualify for Ayushman Bharat.
