Eggs hurled at TMC’s Kajal Sheikh during ‘Martyrs’ Memorial' visit in Birbhum

Birbhum: Eggs were hurled at Faizul Haque aka Kajal Sheikh — sabhadhipati of Birbhum zilla parishad and TMC functionary — on Monday while he was at Basapara in Nanoor to pay tribute at ‘Martyrs’ Memorial’. Sheikh was accompanied by Nanoor MLA Bidhan Chandra Majhi at the time of the incident.
Kajal, who is currently with the rebel Trinamool camp led by Ritabrata Banerjee, later said, “I have never seen those who threw eggs involved in any political activity here. They are anti-social elements who have disrespected ‘Martyrs’ Memorial’.”
The memorial commemorates 11 people killed in Suchpur village in 2000 during a clash over agricultural land. At the time, Mamata Banerjee rushed to the spot, claiming the victims were party supporters. Under the TMC regime, the day was observed as a major event. Even last year, the party organised large rallies and public meetings at Basapara. However, no such grand arrangements were visible this year.
When Sheikh and Majhi approached the memorial to lay floral wreaths, a group of people threw eggs at them while chanting “Thief! Thief!” slogans. Police personnel immediately intervened and detained one of the protesters.
