  • Kolkata: The authority to register births and deaths in Bengal has been transferred from panchayat pradhans and municipal chairpersons or executive officers to govt officials, the state govt said in a notification.

    In an X post, CM Suvendu Adhikari said: “The district collector of each revenue district will now officially function as the district registrar of births and deaths, bringing centralised coordination at the district level.”

    “Block medical officers of health, rural hospital superintendents and medical college heads will act as registrars for all institutional births and deaths within their respective healthcare facilities,” the CM added.

    “Dedicated govt officers will now be appointed as registrars for every gram panchayat and municipality to streamline record-keeping,” he said further.
