Kolkata: Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) officers of Kolkata Customs intercepted an Indian passenger at Kolkata airport on Wednesday and seized 707 live red-eared slider turtles. The passenger had arrived via an IndiGo flight and was stopped after crossing the Green Channel. A detailed search of his checked baggage led to the discovery of the live reptiles, an invasive exotic species, concealed without valid permit or import documentation. The flyer was arrested.
A probe is underway to trace the supply source, intended distribution point, and the syndicate behind the operation.
