Himadri to set up carbon nanotube manufacturing unit

Kolkata: Kolkata-based Himadri Speciality Chemical may soon become the first company in India to set up a carbon nanotube (CNT) manufacturing unit, said company’s CMD and CEO Anurag Choudhary.
“We have successfully developed indigenous carbon nanotube (CNT) technology through our in-house innovation and R&D, marking another milestone in our innovation journey,” Choudhary said. “Backed by a planned capex of around Rs 70 crore, our upcoming 200 TPA (tonnes per annum) CNT facility, targeted for commissioning in Q4FY27 in Bengal, is expected to place Himadri among a small group of global manufacturers serving this high-growth market. This will be a pilot plant, and once stabilised, we will expand,” he said.
Carbon nanotube, according to Choudhary, is a next-generation material used in lithium-ion batteries, electronics, semiconductors, conductive films, sensors, advanced composites, coatings, construction and aerospace, and is expected to benefit from strong global demand. CNT is now produced only in Japan, China and Europe.
Himadri is also moving into premium speciality applications through super speciality carbon black (SSCB). It plans to convert about 6,000 TPA from its existing carbon black stream into SSCB, which is expected to generate higher realisations in niche segments such as lithium-ion batteries, engineered plastics, fabrics and fibres, coatings and conductive black. The SSCB project involves capex of Rs 170 crore and is targeted for commissioning in Q4FY28.
In the first quarter of the current fiscal, Himadri reported PAT of Rs 313 crore on revenue of Rs 1,432 crore.
