Kolkata: State health minister Sharadwat Mukherjee on Saturday made a surprise visit to RG Kar Hospital and expressed strong dissatisfaction over the cleanliness, inadequate management and alleged broker syndicates at the hospital.
Mukherjee visited the hospital around 12.30 pm and launched a surprise inspection of multiple wards. He seemed visibly upset at the condition of the unclean wards, that had garbage and other medical wastes piled up at different corners.
Mukherjee inspected the emergency building and the children’s and women’s wards and spoke to the on-duty staff and also the patients’ families. The minister also held talks with the authorities of the medical college and hospital, asking about the cleanliness measures being taken up there.
Mukherjee later said that such surprise visits would continue. The minister told everyone to remain alert round the clock. Attendants must be kept as soon as one gets admitted, and no broker should ask for money, he said. “The MSVP and principal must be informed about all such cases, and if there is a problem with medicines, that too must be informed,” the minister told the hospital staff.
“There are some vacant beds in wards. The trauma care and emergency wards are grossly inadequate in terms of space. They are dirty, too. Surgical services are not adequate, and cleanliness is an issue that the authorities have been asked to look into,” Mukherjee told TOI.
