  • Kolkata: The state govt is aiming to build a sustainable tourism economy by blending Bengal’s rich cultural, spiritual and intellectual heritage, state tourism minister Shankar Ghosh said at the inaugural session of the Maitri Cultural Economy Samiti (MCES) West Bengal Summit 2026, supported by the Ministry of Culture.

Ghosh said Durga Puja’s recognition as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage reflected the state’s cultural strength. “Bengal is a goldmine of culture. All the heritages that exist in the state are linked with the economy. At the same time, the arts that exist are all part of the economy and tourism. The aim is to take this rich culture and heritage forward to connect this extraordinary legacy with development and livelihood. I believe that this practice which the Maitri Pariwar is conducting will be able to open up new horizons in the field of tourism in our state,” Ghosh said.

In a message for the summit, CM Suvendu Adhikari said, “At a time when the state is witnessing a new phase of transformation and progress, such initiatives provide fresh direction, renewed energy and new pathways for development. I am confident that the summit will usher a new wave of cultural awareness, economic empowerment and public participation across the state.”
