HC extends Abhishek’s interim protection for a month in Signgate case

Kolkata: Calcutta High Court on Friday extended Trinamool MP Abhishek Banerjee’s interim protection from coercive action in the Signgate case for one month on the grounds that the MP will attend summons and cooperate with the investigation. Justice Kaushik Chanda will hear the case again on July 23.
The case against Banerjee centres on the allegation that signatures of several Trinamool MLAs were forged or improperly obtained on a resolution submitted to speaker Rathindra Bose appointing key opposition functionaries.
The resolution bore signature of MLAs on May 6 and was sent on May 9. A section of MLAs later claimed they had not signed the resolution. A CID investigation was ordered. On June 11, a single-judge bench directed Banerjee to appear before CID.
