  • Kolkata: The SIT probing the rape and murder of a 12-year-old girl in Baruipur’s Suryapur, on Tuesday reconstructed the sequence of events — this time in broad daylight, taking all three arrested accused to the crime scene.

The reconstruction came nearly a week after a similar exercise in the early hours of July 8, during which the prime accused, Prabhas Mondal, was killed in police firing.

According to police, Mondal tried to escape by snatching a firearm from an officer and opening fire, using the cover of darkness.

Tuesday’s reconstruction, however, was carried out in broad daylight and under an unprecedented security blanket. A massive contingent from the Baruipur Police District, RAF, armed police and officers in plainclothes cordoned off the entire area. Public access was strictly restricted as the three handcuffed accused — Kabir Molla, Ananda Sardar and Dibakar Sardar — were escorted on foot for nearly 500 metres from the railway gate to the crime scene under a tight security cordon. Cops were deployed at almost every step along the route.

The encounter is currently the subject of a separate CID investigation. A CID team, accompanied by forensic experts, was also present during Tuesday’s reconstruction.

Senior police officers, including Baruipur SP Arvind Kumar Anand, supervised the operation. The forensic team carried out a second meticulous sweep of the area, collecting fresh samples for scientific analysis while mapping the sequence of events on the basis of the statements made by the accused.

“A detailed reconstruction was conducted to verify the statements of the accused and corroborate the evidence collected so far,” a senior police officer said.

Investigators are now matching the findings from the reconstruction with forensic evidence, digital records and eyewitness accounts to identify and plug any gaps in the ongoing investigation.

The visiting CID team also examined the spot where Prabhas Mondal was killed, assessing the positioning of police personnel and the trajectory of the gunfire as part of its independent probe into the encounter.

CM Suvendu Adhikari had visited Baruipur on Saturday, to meet the bereaved family and assured them that he would closely monitor the case to ensure justice. Following the meeting, the victim’s father expressed satisfaction with the pace of the probe.
