Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday granted interim protection from coercive action to former Bengal minister Aroop Biswas, in connection with an FIR filed against him by an Alipore court lawyer alleging attempted murder. The HC directed police to preserve CCTV footage and file a report and told Aroop’s counsel to make the complainant a respondent by Thursday. The matter was adjourned till July 23.
The alleged incident is of June 18. Biswas, after attending a summons in the Messi case, went to Alipore court where his brother was to be produced. The next day, the lawyer filed a complaint against Aroop claiming the former minister’s followers had attempted murder and outraged modesty of women.
Aroop’s counsel argued that lawyers at Alipore court stood outside the chamber where the minister was sitting, waiting to pelt him with eggs. The case was frivolous, the counsel argued.
Calling “egg attacks” a menace, the HC asked if the complainant was a party, and granted interim relief to Aroop from coercive steps.
