  • Kolkata: The grand 125 ft statue of Syama Prasad Mookerjee, the tallest in the country, will come up at Eco Park in New Town. Union home minister Amit Shah is scheduled to lay its foundation stone on Monday.

The monumental project aims to honor the enduring legacy of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder on his 125th birth anniversary year. The existing tallest statue — 65 ft — of Syama Prasad Mookerjee stands in Lucknow now.

According to BJP functionaries, the place where the statue will come up was finalised in consultation with the PWD and Information & cultural affairs (I&CA) depts. “The place was finalised as no other suitable space was available in the city where such a monumental statue could be set up,” said a BJP state functionary.

A year-long state wide celebration will take place to mark the occasion of Mookerjee’s birth anniversary which will be organised by the I&CA dept, a govt official said. The state govt has also planned to revamp Mookerjee’s ancestral home at Bhowanipore into a memorial and library.
