HC seeks proof of land sale denial for SIR deletions

Kolkata: A PIL has been filed in the Calcutta High Court, claiming those deleted from the electoral roll after SIR were unable to sell property. The HC on Wednesday directed the petitioner to specify the cases where such sales were denied.
The matter will next be heard on July 7.
Senior Advocate Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharyya said, “Some poor people want to get their daughter married and sell their land. As their names are not on the voter list, they are unable to.” He also said some of the tribunal orders were not even being supplied and that the grounds of dismissal were not shown.
The division bench of Acting Chief Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty and Justice Partha Sarathi Chatterjee asked Bhattacharyya to provide with paper, where a person could not sell their land just because his/her name was deleted in SIR. “The difficulty is they are not providing it in writing,” Bhattacharyya told the ACJ.
