  • The West Bengal School Service Commission today told the Supreme Court during the hearing on “tainted” candidates that it would publish the list of about 1,900 such candidates tomorrow.

The Commission also assured the court it would ensure that no tainted candidate could make the cut in the aspirants’ list being prepared for the upcoming recruitment examinations for Classes IX, X, XI and XII, scheduled to be held on 7 and 14 September respectively.

Kalyan Banerjee, counsel appearing for the SSC at the hearing of the Division Bench comprising Justices Sanjoy Kumar and Satish Chandra Sharma, said the SSC was ready to publish the list of tainted candidates tomorrow itself. The Bench had yesterday given the SSC seven days to do so.

The SSC’s submission follows relentless scrutiny by the Bench, which again repeated today its word of caution that it would have to ensure that no tainted candidate could be included in the aspirants’ list. Any deviation from this would put the SSC in trouble.

The apex court had cleared only those aspirants who would continue to be in service till 31 December. As per the order, they would have the license to sit for the scheduled examinations by the SSC and the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education.

Earlier today, the Division Bench wanted to know the tentative figure of the tainted candidates from the SSC counsel. Mr Banerjee replied that about 1,900 candidates were found to have been “tainted”, as detected and submitted by the CBI.

The Commission today, in a submission, informed the court that anybody who filed an application seeking to appear in the examinations at this point would also be labelled as “tainted”.

The court, while giving the seven-day deadline to the SSC yesterday, also held the SSC, the Board of Secondary Education, and the state government responsible for the alleged systemic fraud, for which deserving candidates had to bear the brunt.

Group C & D notification: The School Service Commission today issued a notification on recruitment of Group C and D staffers for schools in the state.

It has invited applications for recruitment to 2,989 posts for Group C and 5,488 posts for Group D. Filing of applications for the posts on the SSC website would begin on 16 September and would continue till 5 p.m. on 31 October.

The Group C and D employees were among the 26,000 teachers and other staff, who were sacked by the top court for having been recruited through improper means. The notification is to fill up the resultant vacancies.
