  • In a tragic incident, an eleven-year-old boy, identified as Alamin Rahman, was killed in a leopard attack at Uttar Angrabhasha in Nagrakata, Jalpaiguri, on Wednesday evening.

According to locals, the leopard pounced on Alamin around 6.30 p.m. and dragged him into a nearby vegetable field. Shocked villagers, who witnessed the attack, chased the animal and later found it feeding on the boy. As they tried to drive the leopard away, the animal fled, leaving behind the grievously injured body of the child.

The boy had multiple deep wounds and severe bleeding. Enraged villagers soon launched an agitation, accusing the forest department of negligence. They alleged that leopards frequently enter their houses between 5 and 6 p.m, yet no patrolling is carried out during that time to prevent attacks on people or livestock.

Officials from Banarhat police station, along with forest staff from Binnaguri and Diana ranges, rushed to the spot, but were confronted by angry family members and villagers. As the situation worsened, Additional SP (Rural) and the SDPO of Dhupguri, intervened to pacify the crowd and restore order. The police later sent the body for post-mortem.

Villagers claimed similar leopard attacks had recently occurred in neighbouring areas like Totapara, Kalabari, and Gayerkata. They warned of a larger movement if preventive measures were not taken immediately.

Alamin was a Class VI student of Kalabari High School.
