Metro Railway, Kolkata, has successfully commissioned the TETRA (Terrestrial Trunked Radio) communication system on the Blue Line (Belgachia to Rabindra Sarovar underground tunnel section) and the Yellow Line on 26 August. P Uday Kumar Reddy, GM, Metro Railway inaugurated this communication system at Baranagar station on 26 August in presence of senior officers of Metro Railway.
Reliable communication inside tunnels is crucial for ensuring operational safety and effective coordination during train movements. The newly commissioned TETRA system provides secure, real-time, and uninterrupted communication between train operators, station controllers, and the Operations Control Centre (OCC), even deep inside the underground sections. This significantly enhances the Metro’s capability to respond quickly to any emergency situations within the tunnels, ensuring passengers safety.
In addition to the Blue and Yellow Lines, the operational TETRA systems on the Purple Line and the Orange Line have been successfully integrated into a unified communication platform. This integration enables seamless, end-to-end connectivity across all four lines of Metro Railway Kolkata, providing a single, robust network for train operations, emergency response, and system monitoring.
Speaking on the occasion, P Uday Kumar Reddy, general manager Metro Railway Kolkata said: “With large sections of the Blue and Yellow Lines running through underground tunnels, uninterrupted and secure communication is of paramount importance. The commissioning and integration of the advanced TETRA system is a technological milestone that equips Metro Railway with a reliable platform to ensure smoother operations and enhanced passenger safety.”
