Key TRD work at Andal for safer, smoother train operations

The Asansol Division of Eastern Railway has carried out a series of important works through its traction distribution (TRD) department as part of the ongoing yard remodelling and non-interlocking (NI) programme at Andal. All works were completed during the NI schedule without disrupting regular train services, with the objective of strengthening infrastructure, enhancing safety and ensuring smoother train movement for passengers.
The projects included the erection of 11 new portals in the Andal station area, allowing the removal of 34 critically implanted masts that had previously restricted operations, as well as the dismantling of four additional old masts, thereby eliminating obstructions and reducing safety risks. Approximately 600 metres of new overhead wiring were laid in Andal UP Yard, strengthening the traction network and ensuring an uninterrupted power supply. At Raniganj, the contact wire height at four locations was raised to improve electrical clearance and ensure safer train passage.
Worn-out contact wires and about 300 metres of catenary wire in the UP/RL line were replaced, boosting the reliability and current-carrying capacity of the overhead equipment. ATD counterweights were also renewed to maintain proper tension, thereby reducing the risk of sagging or wire failure.
The capacity of two yard lines at Andal Yard was further enhanced by increasing the clear availability mark (CAL) at two critical points, allowing for the accommodation of longer trains with additional coaches and improving operational flexibility and rake handling.
Collectively, these measures will enhance OHE reliability, operational safety and preparedness for future traffic growth, ensuring safer, smoother and more dependable train services for passengers.
