  • Eight years after the formation of the new district, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee virtually inaugurated from Burdwan the new office building of the District Magistrate and Collector of West Burdwan district today. She also inaugurated the office of the Commissioner of Police of Asansol Durgapur Police Commissionerate (ADPC) at Asansol during her administrative meeting in Burdwan.

The DM’s office at Kalyanpur Housing in the Asansol North Police Station area was constructed at a cost of Rs 30 crores, while the CP’s office has been built near the court area in Asansol South Police Station precinct with a budget of Rs18 crores.

Till date, the DM’s office was operating from Asansol-Durgapur Development Authority (ADDA) building in Asansol near Shristi Nagar. With the new building and compound coming up, most of the district officials’ offices will be located in the
same building and hence enable both administrative efficiency as well as easier access by the public.

    S. Ponnambalam, DM of West Burdwan, Biswajeet Bhattacaharya, SDM (Sadar) of Asansol, and S. Pal, ADM of Asansol, had inspected the new premises yesterday and were happy with the new facility.

Similarly, the CP’s office till now was located at the Evelyn Lodge Building off G.T.Road in Asansol. Before Burdwan was bifurcated, it had housed the office of Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) of Asansol. The building is owned by SAIL’s IISCO Steel Plant, Burnpur. CP Sunil Chaudhury too had surveyed his new office before its inauguration

All the top offices of the ADPC, including the Special Branch, Detective Department, Traffic Department, Enforcement Department, among others, will now be accommodated at the new CP’s office premises.

It may be recalled that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had bifurcated the erstwhile Burdwan District Police and had set up Asansol Durgapur Police Commissionerate from 1 September 2011, barely a few days after coming to power. A triple murder case in Hirapur had prompted the move.

West Burdwan district, along with East Burdwan, was inaugurated on Poila Baisakh (Bengali New Year’s day) in 2017 by
the Chief Minister by dividing the 7,024-square kilometre Burdwan district, with Asansol as the new district headquarters.

Kavi Dutta, ADDA Chairman, thanked Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for sanctioning and enabling the setting up of the two new office premises in Asansol today. Asansol North MLA and state labour, law and judiciary minister, Moloy Ghatak, said the CM had gifted several assets to the Asansol-Durgapur region, including Women Police Stations, Special
CBI Court, Consumer Court, a commercial airport at Andal, and now two state-of-the-art administrative head offices of Asansol’s civil and police wings.
