Bengal BJP plans weekly outreach sessions to ‘reactivate’ veterans

Kolkata: The Bengal BJP will hold outreach sessions at its Muralidhar Sen Lane office every Monday to try and bring back the veterans into active campaigns before the assembly polls and energise the party rank and file.
The decision follows multiple statements by state unit president Samik Bhattacharya, who took over the reins a couple of months back, that the organisation would benefit from active participation of veteran workers who have been lying low for some time.
"The BJP is like one big family. Every week, I will meet party workers and have a freewheeling chat on various issues," Bhattacharya said on Tuesday. | Gold Rates Today in Kolkata | Silver Rates Today in KolkataParty sources said the meetings would be held every Monday at the central Kolkata office. The date of the inaugural session will be announced soon.
Bhattacharya is close to many old-timers in the state BJP and has often been involved in mediating between rival camps. When Union minister Sukanta Majumdar was at the helm of the Bengal BJP, he repeatedly got Bhattacharya involved in resolving factional feuds.
After being elected as state president, Bhattacharya called up former state unit chief Dilip Ghosh to seek his blessings. Ghosh later said every party veteran was with Bhattacharya.
BJP sources said several old-timers who have been inactive for some time have been brought back to active politics in the past two months.
"Sushanta Pal and Kamal Beriwal were seen welcoming the PM at the Dum Dum rally last Friday. Pal is a former secretary of the state unit and the Beriwal family has a decades-old relationship with the party," said a Bengal BJP neta. The weekly sessions will also help address concerns of workers in the districts who don't often get a chance to speak to top leaders. "Bhattacharya's initiative will strengthen the organisation. That's the only way to mount an effective challenge against TMC," a senior neta said.
