• Announcements still stuck in time

  • Kolkata: A message being broadcast across the public address system at metro stations over the past few days has left young commuters confused and the elderly perplexed.

"Don't touch any unattended object like a briefcase, bag, thermos, transistor, etc., which could be a bomb" is a warning that is being repeatedly announced at stations across different metro lines. While the intent is to warn people from touching commonplace objects that lie unattended, the message is lost on anyone below 30 years as most of the objects mentioned stopped being relevant decades ago.

"What's a briefcase, thermos, or transistor? Have you heard about them?" class VII student Rajat Adhikari was heard asking his classmate Dhiman Dey at Esplanade station on the Blue Line. The latter shrugged his shoulders, and they began discussing something else. | Gold Rates Today in Kolkata | Silver Rates Today in KolkataSomnath Dasgupta, a retired executive who heard the announcement at both Sealdah station on the Green Line and Kalighat station on the Blue Line, remarked that the message was either written by someone who wasn't in touch with reality or it was composed decades earlier. "People now use backpacks, laptop bags, and duffle bags. The announcement should be contemporary and resonate with commuters, not about things that are archaic," he pointed out.

A Metro Railway spokesperson said they would look into the content of the announcement.
