Refused 100 for alcohol, man kills mom in Salt Lake

Kolkata: A 28-year-old youth was arrested on Monday for allegedly strangling his mother to death after she refused to give him Rs 100 for alcohol. The incident took place at CJ Block in Salt Lake, where the woman, Saraswati Murmu (50), worked as a caretaker at a house. Her son, Munna, often visited her and lived with her at times, police said. An officer at the Bidhannagar East Police Station said Munna demanded Rs 100 from his mother on Sunday night, reportedly to buy alcohol. When she refused, he strangled her with a scarf, said police.
Alerted by residents of the area, a police team visited the CJ Block house on Monday morning to find the woman's body, the scarf still tied around her neck. Cops sent the body to Bidhannagar Sub-Divisional Hospital, where doctors declared her dead. Neighbours said Saraswati had been at the house for years, working as the caretaker. She also earned some extra money by collecting and selling waste paper. Her son was allegedly addicted to drugs and alcohol. Neighbours claimed that arguments between the two over money had escalated in recent months.
