  • Kolkata: The former Bangladesh police officer caught by BSF while entering India on Saturday was facing murder charges in the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) of Bangladesh, said investigators questioning him on Monday. Mohammed Arifuzzaman had planned to take shelter in India at his in-laws' residence, cops added.

Arifuzzaman has been identified as a suspended assistant commissioner of Rangpur Metropolitan Police. He was named an accused in the killing of Abu Sayeed, a Begum Rokeya University student who was shot dead during last year's protests in Bangladesh. In a viral video, Arifuzzaman was seen snatching a rifle from a constable and firing at students. The ICT has already framed charges against 30 people in the case. Apart from this, he faces several other charges in Bangladesh.

On Sunday, Arifuzzaman told reporters: "I had been hiding in Bangladesh's Satkhira border region for months. As the situation grew more dangerous, I tried to find a refuge in India.
