Kolkata: A migrant worker who had returned from Mumbai a month ago after spending six days in detention on suspicion of being an illegal immigrant died on Monday, with his family alleging that he contracted pneumonia while in detention.
Golam Mondal, 52, had been working in Mumbai for seven years as a cleaner in a private office. Mondal's family claimed he was tortured in detention and denied food.
Mondal's daughter Marijna Khatun said: "Police picked him up from our rented home saying his documents would be verified and he would be released in half an hour. He produced his documents, but they jailed him for six days and then kept him in an empty municipal office room on pretext of treatment. By then he had developed pneumonia. | Gold Rates Today in Kolkata | Silver Rates Today in KolkataKhatun said her father stopped eating after returning from Mumbai.
