  • There is a likelihood of adverse weather in Kolkata and most districts of South Bengal over the next three days. The weather office today has said that until Saturday, the southern districts may experience light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms.

Winds may also blow at a speed of 30 to 40 km per hour. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday warned of heavy rainfall across West Bengal through Monday, even as a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal weakened but left the sea rough and unsafe for fishing. The IMD has advised fishermen not to venture into the north Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal waters of West Bengal on Friday and Saturday. Heavy to very heavy rain is expected in parts of south Bengal from Thursday, with rainfall intensity peaking on Friday and Saturday.

Districts including, East Midnapore, North and South 24-Parganas, Murshidabad, Nadia, East Burdwan, Howrah, Hooghly, Jhargram and Bankura are forecast to be the worst affected, accompanied by thunderstorms and wind gusts of 30-40 kmph.

In north Bengal, Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar may see heavy rain on Thursday and Friday, while Malda and both Dinajpur districts are likely to receive heavy showers over the weekend. Light to moderate thunderstorms are expected in Darjeeling and other northern districts.

On Sunday and Monday, heavy rain will shift towards western districts including Bankura, Purulia, West Midnapore, Jhargram and Birbhum, according to the IMD.
