Dengue cases on the rise but situation not alarming: Docs

Kolkata: Most hospitals across the city are seeing a slight increase in the number of dengue cases in the past week. While all hospitals said that the rise is not alarming and numbers are far less than previous outbreaks, doctors said there is a need to take all precautionary and preventive measures. For more than a week, the city is facing dry spells frequently amidst sudden short but intense showers, leaving water accumulation in many pockets. Experts said the water puddles can become a major breeding ground for the mosquito that causes dengue. "It takes only a small amount of water for this mosquito to breed. Hence, every household should be vigilant of any stagnant water around," said a state health department official.
A KMC official said, cases have registered a marginal increase compared to last year. The civic body registered 255 cases this year. At the Peerless Hospital laboratory, around 14 samples are being tested every day. Around 30-40% of the samples are positive. "Fortunately, none of the admitted patients have severe infections, and there has been no mortality so far. Symptoms are milder than in previous years, and platelet count is not dropping to alarming levels," said chief microbiologist Bhaskar Narayan Chaudhuri of Peerless Hospital.
