  • The Kolkata Police on Tuesday issued summons to Ashok Dinda, BJP MLA from Moyna in East Midnapore district and former India cricketer, to appear before it for interrogations for allegedly threatening and abusing policemen during the march to Nabanna.

The saffron party joined the protests without any party symbol or flags demanding justice for the brutal rape and murder of a woman postgraduate trainee at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital one year ago.

Sources in the Kolkata Police headquarters at Lalbazar said that Mr Dinda has been asked to appear before the officers of New Market police station on 17 August.

“Mr Dinda, during Saturday’s protest march programme, threatened our officers and provoked others to assault our on-duty officers. He also assaulted a security guard of a bureaucrat. He has been summoned to appear before New Market police station on 17 August,” sources said.

Video footage of Mr Dinda threatening and abusing the police personnel was seized, the sources said, adding that on the basis of the video an FIR has been lodged against him.

Seven cases — five by the Kolkata Police and two by the Howrah Police — have been registered for allegedly obstructing security personnel from performing their duties, assaulting them and causing damage to public properties during the march to the state secretariat across the Vidyasagar Setu in Howrah on 9 August.

Chaos and violent agitation dominated the streets in the city and adjacent Howrah town on Saturday, a day that marked the completion of one year of the horrific incident.

Besides Mr Dinda, cases have also been registered against several other leaders and workers during the protest movement on Saturday.
