  • Kolkata: The civic authorities on Tuesday issued a warning to site managers at two under-construction projects at Sunny Park after a local resident died of dengue. Two others in the same premises contracted the viral disease.

Following the death of artist Swaroop Mukerji, who lived at 6 Sunny Park, civic officials visited the complex that houses 180 apartments as well as two construction sites in the neighbourhood: 3/1 and 4 Sunny Park. Residents of Sunny Park have been complaining about the construction work leading to clogged drains and waterlogging in the area.

Sunny Park Apartment Owners Association secretary Niladri Sekhar Das said the situation is so dire that the underground parking lot of the building has been regularly getting inundated this monsoon in ankle-deep water. In addition, rainwater accumulation at the construction sites, one bang opposite 6 Sunny Park and the other next to it, has turned them into mosquito breeding spots.

We have requested the buildings department to send a notice to the developer and asked for the removal of debris from the area. Vector-control activities are also in progress.

" Mukerji, a cancer survivor, was admitted to Manipal Hospital. The hospital's critical care specialist, Tanmoy Banerjee, said this was the only severe dengue case the hospital received this year.

Two other residents in the complex who were hospitalised with dengue are out of danger. One of them has been discharged.

Mukerji and writer Amit Chaudhuri, who also stays in the complex, were at the forefront of their opposition to the demolition of heritage houses and the construction of large projects in the narrow lane.
