Kolkata: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has decided to pull down the existing structure of Purba Puitiary market near Payara Bagan in the Kudghat area and build a modern shopping complex there. The KMC market under ward 114 of borough XI was in a precarious condition and required renovation, according to civic officials.
The estimated cost of the renovation work, as well as the time for beginning the work, have not been finalised yet. "Currently, the matter is in the KMC's market engineering cell that will estimate the cost of the remodelling project. We are in talks with the traders of the market about the implementation of the project," said a senior official of KMC's market department.
Before the remodelling of the market, the civic body will need to relocate around 492 traders. While 363 traders are doing business inside the market, 129 others sit with their wares outside. According to KMC sources, all these traders registered with the market department may be relocated to a nearby ground or any other suitable place during reconstruction work at the market.
Amiruddin Bobby, mayor-in-council member, market, said, "After shifting the traders, we will float a tender and select a real estate agency for redeveloping the market. Then it will be decided whether the KMC will shell out solely the cost of the market's redevelopment or execute the project through a private-public partnership.
"As per the civic body's plan, a shopping complex will come up at the market site, and this will have retail shops, a food court, and a car parking area to cater to the taste of modern-day buyers. "We are also stressing an adequate firefighting system in our remodelling project of the market," said an official.
