The Kolkata Police said on Sunday that they launched an investigation into the allegation of the RG Kar victim’s mother that the police had beaten her during a protest march organised by the BJP on the anniversary of her daughter’s rape and murder at a state-run medical college and hospital in the West Bengal capital last year.

Commissioner of Police Manoj Verma, who had initially dismissed the woman’s claims, said the investigation would proceed even without a formal complaint from the victim’s family. “She has been injured, and that’s unfortunate. But why it happened and how it happened is being investigated,” he said. “We are investigating from all angles. CCTV footage is being viewed. It is not possible for us to say anything right now without seeing everything.”
