Injury to RG Kar victim’s mom: Kol CP orders suo motu probe

Kolkata: Following the alleged attack on parents of the RG Kar rape-murder victim, city police commissioner Manoj Verma on Sunday said that a suo motu investigation had been started. According to the CP, police are reviewing footage from four sources — bodycams, traffic CCTV cameras, drone surveillance cameras and those aired on TV. Cops are reviewing how and where the parents were attacked, Verma said, and promised adequate steps against those responsible.
While the victim's parents haven't lodged a formal complaint, BJP said the matter would be raised in the Calcutta High Court on Monday.
"Until we analyse the footage from different angles, it's not possible to say exactly what happened," said Verma on Sunday after checking on a police constable who was injured during Saturday's clash and was admitted at SSKM. The victim's father, however, has questioned the intent.
On Saturday, the victim's parents were taken to hospital after getting hurt in a scuffle between cops and protesters during a march to Nabanna. In an attempt to push the crowd back, cops had resorted to mild lathicharge. The parents appeared to stumble and the victim's mother allegedly sustained a head injury and her ‘shankha' (conch shell bangles) was broken. On Sunday, she returned to her Sodepur home after getting discharged from a private hospital. Her vitals were normal, the hospital said.
The victim's father, however, alleged that the hospital had tried to deny admission to his wife and had fudged her reports. After a CT scan was done and the doctor on duty said that she needed admission, the hospital started delaying the process and finally said that she didn't need hospitalisation, he claimed. "Doctors said that they are unable to admit the patient due to political pressure," he alleged.
The initial report from the hospital, he claimed, had said she suffered a serious head injury during the Nabanna march after being attacked by police. "Today, they handed us a report claiming she was injured in an accident. This is false. We refused to accept it and will inform the court," he told TOI.
The hospital discharge report on Sunday stated: "She was able to sleep well and reported no headache or nausea. She tolerated oral intake without difficulty and was ambulant, walking in the emergency department under supervision. On morning review by ER consultants and Neuro team, she had no new complaints, hence they opined continuation of their earlier advice to continue conservative management at home.
"Calling the allegations "outright lie", TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said, "There was no pressure from anyone," and added, "We ask anyone, including her parents, to provide one photo or one video of police hitting them. They cannot provide it, because it did not happen.
"The victim's father also questioned the CP's assurance of an inquiry into the allegations. "Why was last year's RG Kar CCTV footage never checked? What guarantee is there that this time's footage will not be AI-generated," he asked. He alleged that the RAF had beaten his wife with sticks, while he was pushed during the march. He further claimed that police personnel were stationed in the hospital to keep watch.
The victim's mother said she "never thought this could happen". "Why did they (cops) stop us? All we wanted was to reach Nabanna and seek justice for my daughter," she said.
BJP functionary Kaustav Bagchi said the parents were likely to lodge a complaint soon against "police excesses". "Lawyer Phiroze Edulji has taken the details from the parents and the issue will be raised at the Calcutta HC on Monday," he said.
Union minister Sukanta Majumdar on Sunday went to meet the mother at the hospital. "She has decided not to wear shankha till they get justice for their daughter," he said.
"Where was Majumdar yesterday? Some BJP netas pushed the parents forward for a photo op yesterday, and today Majumdar has gone for another photo op," Ghosh commented.
