Kolkata: A 52-year-old Calcutta High Court lawyer, Kaustuv Chandra Das, died after falling from the window of his fourth-floor home in Block A of Saptaparni Complex at Ballygunge on Saturday evening.
The complex is under renovation, and that is why the grilles outside the windows on some of the floors were removed to facilitate the work. According to the security guards, Das fell through the window of his 2BHK flat around 4.30 pm. Das's flat and two other flats on the floors below had the iron grilles of the windows removed a week ago, sources said. Cops said they have started a case of unnatural death and they are not ruling out any of the three aspects, be it accidental, suicidal, or homicidal in nature. Till late on Sunday, there was no official complaint lodged by the family, cops said. A senior officer of Kolkata Police said they are accessing the CCTV footage of the complex and are speaking to complex residents and neighbours to know the sequence of events.
"We have learnt that he was ill and was unable to attend court sessions off late. Family members have even suggested that he was depressed. The space from where he fell through was under lock and key. We are checking if he had fallen down or had jumped on his own," an officer said, adding that no suicide note was recovered.
A complex resident said, "Das had collected a parcel from the main gate around 2.30 pm, after which he went back inside his apartment.
"Locals said Das's fall was broken by a tree branch outside the building, however, he still fell on his head and spine on the road below, leading to severe injuries. He was taken to a private hospital in south Kolkata, where he succumbed to his wounds at 6 pm. "A loud thud was heard, everyone rushed to the spot, and next we saw that someone fell through the window," said a neighbour.
When the incident occurred, Das's family members were in a different room of the apartment, unaware that he had fallen through the window. Security guards, upon learning about the incident, informed Das's family. Das is survived by two children and a wife, who is also an advocate. TOI tried to speak to his college-going children, who said they were grieving and were not in a position to speak about their father's demise.
