The ruling Trinamul Congress has blamed the unrest on the streets today and the problem commuters faced while out on work or people celebrating Raksha Bandhan. The TMC leaders said the trouble defies the essence of the day, which Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore had tried to project as day of harmony.
Trinamul Congress women wing chairperson Chandrima Bhattacharya said that Rakhi carries the vision of Kobiguru Rabindranath Tagore, a Bengal where unity in diversity is a way of life. He walked on the city streets in 1905
“The BJP neither honours this heritage nor understands its soul. Their politics survives only by dividing, by tearing apart the very fabric that holds people together, by turning harmony into hostility. But Bengal will never allow their politics of hate prevail. They are trying to divide people. Even on this day they, are sowing hatred. The party has never tried to be associated with the Bengali fabric or understand Bengali sentiments,” said Chandrima.
The TMC also was equally caustic on the saffron camp and even blamed the violence on the opposition party. “One year ago today, the R G Kar tragedy shook the nation’s conscience and left an unhealable scar. The pain endured by the victim’s family still weighs heavily on us.
“Determined to ensure such horrors are never repeated, the West Bengal Legislative Assembly unanimously passed the Aparajita Anti-Rape Bill, proposing:
# Harshest punishment for rapists
# Swift, watertight investigations
# Speedy trials to deliver justice without delay
“But when it came to protecting India’s daughters, the @narendramodi Govt. chose obstruction over action, raising frivolous objections and sending the Bill back for reconsideration.
“Rape is a plague on society. It demands more than lip service and token gestures. It calls for decisive laws and strong deterrence. Yet, those who profit from selective outrage will never walk the talk because for them, women’s safety is just another political prop.”
