In a brazen daylight attack, Amar Roy (35), son of Trinamul Congress leader Kuntala Roy, was shot dead at Dodeya under Cooch Behar-II on Saturday.
The incident occurred when Roy and his friend Alamgir arrived at the weekly Dadeya market in a four-wheeler. According to sources, a heated altercation broke out with a group of miscreants in the market. The attackers surrounded them, blocked their movement, and opened fire. Panic gripped the area as the assailants — reportedly wearing helmets — fired multiple rounds before fleeing. Shops and stalls quickly shut down.
Roy sustained a bullet wound to the head and was rushed to Cooch Behar Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Alamgir was shifted to a private hospital for advanced treatment.
A heavy police contingent reached the spot and secured the medical college premises. Police have launched an investigation but no arrests have been made so far.
Kuntala Roy is the pradhan of the TMC-led Dauaguri gram panchayat in Cooch Behar. District TMC president Abhijit Dey Bhowmik and North Bengal development minister Udayan Guho visited the hospital. While Guha refrained from commenting without full details, Dey Bhowmik hinted at the possibility of a “political vendetta” behind the killing.
Cooch Behar, known for its political volatility, has witnessed a string of violent incidents in recent weeks. Earlier, Panchayat Karmadaksha Raju Dey was attacked, leading to the arrest of a BJP MLA’s son. Just two days ago, several houses were allegedly vandalised by TMC activists at Nazirhat in Dinhata, where women — including a pregnant woman — were reportedly assaulted. On 5 August, Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari’s convoy was attacked and his car damaged by TMC supporters during his visit to protest assaults on BJP MLAs.
