• Husband arrested for Beleghata woman’s death

  • Kolkata: A day after the death of a 29-year-old woman in Beleghata amidst allegations that she had been harassed for not bearing a boy, Narkeldanga Police on Friday arrested Rohit Kumar Shaw, the husband of deceased Sweta Prasad Shaw, in connection with her death.

The arrest followed a formal complaint by Sweta's father Om Prakash Prasad, accusing Rohit and his family members of subjecting Sweta to prolonged physical and mental cruelty over dowry demands, culminating in her alleged murder on Wednesday.

Initial reports from the hospital suggested hanging as the cause of death, but Sweta's family and neighbours alleged that she was subjected to mental torture for over three years, primarily due to her inability to bear a male child. She has two daughters from her marriage.

Sweta's in-laws, however, have claimed that she hanged herself following a dispute with her husband over a cancelled trip to Meghalaya. According to Rohit, the argument arose due to financial constraints, leading Sweta to lock herself in a room. When she did not respond, Rohit reportedly broke down the door to find her hanging from the ceiling fan. Despite their efforts to rush her to the hospital, she was declared dead on arrival.

Joint CP (crime & traffic) Rupesh Kumar said no suicide note was found at the scene, and police are waiting for the postmortem report to ascertain the exact cause of death.

An inquest and autopsy have been arranged.
