  • The parents of the R G Kar Medical College rape-murder victim travelled to Delhi from West Bengal Wednesday to meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah and the director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), reiterating they are dissatisfied with the agency’s investigation into the case.

CBI, which took over the R G Kar Medical College rape-murder case from the Kolkata police, has submitted five status reports, including the latest on July 16, to the Sealdah court, which is hearing the case.

Speaking to The Indian Express, the postgraduate trainee doctor’s mother said they would be in the national capital until Thursday. “We will visit the CBI office to meet the director (Praveen Sood) Thursday, as we are not happy with the investigation.”

“We have sent an email to the CBI office seeking an appointment, but till now, we have not gotten a reply. As we are going to Delhi for some legal work, we would like to meet with the CBI director. We mailed last time as well, and didn’t get any reply, but we were able to meet the director. Tomorrow afternoon, we will be meeting the director,” said her father.

“We are not happy with the CBI officers investigating the case. They do not disclose anything, and it seems the agency is only saying what the state police had said, nothing more, even though a year has passed. Even CBI is saying there is only one culprit.”

He said they have also requested a meeting with Home Minister Shah’s office, and are hopeful that he will agree to meet them. “If given the opportunity, we will meet with him to seek justice for our daughter.”

The postgraduate trainee doctor was found raped and murdered at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata last August. The Kolkata police initially investigated the case, before the Calcutta High Court transferred the probe to the CBI. A civic volunteer, Sanjoy Roy, was found guilty of rape and murder by a Kolkata court in January 2025, and he was sentenced to life imprisonment. However, the doctor’s family has been saying that he was not alone in committing the crime.

On Sunday, the doctor’s parents said they were reaching out to various political parties, except the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), to join the Nabanna Abhijan, a march to the West Bengal secretariat, demanding justice for their daughter on her death anniversary on August 9.

On Wednesday, a Howrah resident filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Calcutta High Court against the Nabanna Abhijan. The resident submitted the petition before a division bench of Justice Sujoy Paul and Justice Smita Das De, alleging that Nabanna Abhijan disrupts public life.

The court has permitted the case to be filed, and the hearing is expected to take place Thursday.

According to the petitioner, during such rallies, common people, such as children returning from school and office workers, face problems. Traders had previously filed a case in the high court regarding this matter.
