• Cop dials fake customer care number, loses 53k

  • Kolkata: An ASI lost Rs 53,000 to cyber fraudsters after trying to lodge a complaint on a customer care call about a payment discrepancy of his electricity bill on a digital payment app. The ASI, currently posted as a security officer for an IG of the state police, lodged a complaint with Bidhannagar South police station on Monday.

    Cops said the ASI paid Rs 1,160 for his electricity bill on Aug 2. The amount was debited from his account but the transaction failed. The next day, he called the app's customer care number he found on Google, after which, the fraudsters posing as support representatives insisted on a video call.

    He was then asked to download an app and make a minimum payment of Re 1. Shortly after completing these steps, Rs 53,000 was debited from his account.
