Howrah: A migrant worker died by electrocution as he stepped into stagnant water in the Ramrajatala area of Howrah on Tuesday morning. Bijoy Das (40), also known as Nanki, lost his life after he held onto a building's grille, which had become electrified after a wire from the meter box came in contact with the water, which in turn, was in contact with the grille. Das, who worked part-time at a packers and movers firm, was helping move the belongings of a resident of the five-storey building, Swapan Roy, from his third-floor flat to a goods vehicle parked outside. Roy was moving his belongings to his home in Khanakul. Three-four men, including Das, were loading the goods on the truck when the accident occurred.
Das was immediately taken to a nearby private hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Cops from the Chatterjeehat Police Station and electricity distribution company officials arrived at the building and temporarily snapped power supply there.
Police said Ram Charan Sett Road had been waterlogged after several days and Monday night's downpour made the situation worse. Das, originally from Sasaram in Bihar, was employed at a factory in Ramrajatala and at times worked for the movers company. Police have registered a case of unnatural death.
